Since 2007, SEED has awarded over 70 high school scholarships annually to low-income students in western Kenya. Our scholarship recipients are carefully selected based on academic achievement, teacher references and financial need. SEED covers school expenses not subsidized by the national government, including uniforms, text books, meals, exam fees and other minor costs (approximately CA$130/year).
SEED Scholarships have improved the academic performance and school attendance for many students. Recipients are required to maintain a minimum grade to continue receiving financial support. As one teacher in Kenya notes: “Those receiving scholarships are more active and are more often attending classes compared to those who are not; therefore, those receiving scholarships are improving in grades.”
The scholarship program will be phased down to 40 students annually (10 per grade) by 2023 in order to focus our resources on SEED Junior Academy.
